IMCPL's 2009 Summer Reading Program,"Undercover Readers," Kicks Off on June 8!
May 19, 2009
Children of all ages and parents are invited to experience the joy of reading during the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library’s 2009 Summer Reading Program, Undercover Readers, which begins on Monday, June 8 and continues through Saturday, August 1 at all IMCPL locations, as well as the Beech Grove Public Library.
Now in its 90th year, the Summer Reading Program is a fun and rewarding way for children to maintain the reading habit and improve reading skills during the summer. This year’s sleuthing theme encourages young secret agent readers to crack the case and pursue all leads to great prizes by the book.
Participants can register at any IMCPL location to receive a Point Card to keep track of their reading progress. Points can then be redeemed for a variety of prizes, including the latest clue-gathering gadgets.
The Summer Reading Program is not just for school-age children. Parents with younger children are invited to join the program and earn credit by reading aloud to them. Studies have proven that children who have been read to from an early age perform better in school and are more likely to become lifelong readers.
Another component of the Summer Reading Program provides opportunities for middle school and high school students to become Reading Giants. By volunteering to spend time reading aloud to younger children at the library through the summer, these teens can earn Summer Reading Program points, a cool baseball cap, and a $25 gift card.
In 2008, over 57,000 children and families participated in the Summer Reading Program, making it one of the most successful reading programs in the nation.
The Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library Foundation is the proud sponsor of this year’s program. Major funding is provided by Presenting Sponsor, the Comcast Foundation.
Supporting Sponsors include 92.3 WTTS Indianapolis; The R.B. Annis Educational Foundation; Carrier Corporation; Chase; Fox 59/Indiana’s 4; Indiana Blood Center; The Kroger Co.; The Library Fund, a fund of The Indianapolis Foundation; Lilly Endowment Inc.; Ruth Lilly Philanthropic Foundation; Radio Disney Indianapolis; and The Toysmith Group.
Local organizations magnify the reading fun-factor by donating prizes: Chick-fil-A; The Children’s Museum Guild Haunted House; Indianapolis Indians; Indiana Fever; Marion County Fair; Regal Entertainment Group; Royal Pin Leisure Centers; and IMAX/Indiana State Museum.
