It's Not Too Late to Register for "Undercover Readers!"
July 7, 2009
There’s still time for children of all ages and parents to become part of this summer’s reading extravaganza by registering for the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library’s 2009 Summer Reading Program, Undercover Readers," continuing through Saturday, August 1 at all IMCPL locations.
By becoming a secret agent reader, participants can pursue all leads to a variety of great prizes as a reward for their reading activity. As the Library’s major reading initiative of the year, the Summer Reading Program provides incentive for children to maintain the reading habit during the summer.
Registration takes place at any IMCPL location where prospective secret agents can receive a Point Card to keep track of their reading progress. Points earned for all reading activity can be redeemed for such prizes as paperback books, clue-gathering gadgets and passes to local activities, such as the Marion County Fair, Royal Pin bowling, IMAX/Indiana State Museum, The Children’s Museum Guild Haunted House, and Indiana Fever games.
Passes (buy one, get one free) also can be earned for the Indianapolis Indians game during Library Night at Victory Field on Monday, July 20 at 7 p.m., sponsored by the Indiana Blood Center.
Parents with younger children can join the program and earn credit by reading aloud to them. Studies show that children who have been read to from an early age perform better in school and are more likely to become lifelong readers.
Another component of the Summer Reading Program provides opportunities for middle school and high school students to become Reading Giants. By volunteering to spend time reading aloud to younger children at the library through the summer, these teens can earn Summer Reading Program points, a cool baseball cap, and a $25 gift card.
In 2008, over 57,000 children and families participated in the Summer Reading Program, making it one of the most successful reading programs in the nation. The Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library Foundation is the proud sponsor of this year’s program.
Major funding is provided by Presenting Sponsor, the Comcast Foundation.
Supporting Sponsors include 92.3 WTTS Indianapolis; The R.B. Annis Educational Foundation; Carrier Corporation; Chase; FOX 59/Indiana’s 4; Indiana Blood Center; The Kroger Co.; The Library Fund, a fund of The Indianapolis Foundation; Lilly Endowment Inc.; Ruth Lilly Philanthropic Foundation; Radio Disney Indianapolis; and The Toysmith Group.
