The Library’s 2011 Summer Reading Program: A Science Odyssey!
May 24, 2011
Children of all ages and families are invited to begin an epic journey of science discovery and reading achievement during the Indianapolis Public Library's 2011 Summer Reading Program, "A Science Odyssey," whose presenting sponsor is the Comcast Foundation.
From June 6 - August 1, the Summer Reading Program will give participants the opportunity to enhance their reading skills and earn points for all reading activity. Points can then be exchanged for a variety of great prizes from such local organizations as the Indianapolis Indians, Indiana Fever, Royal Pin Leisure Centers, Chili’s Grill and Bar, The Children’s Museum Guild Haunted House, White Castle, the Indiana State Museum Center for Science and Culture, and IMAX/Indiana State Museum.
This year’s theme reflects a new two-year Library initiative to bolster young people’s interest and proficiency in science subjects and underscores the importance of science-related careers to our economic future. As a partner with state and federal education officials, the Library is uniquely positioned to bring science to life through literature-based digital activities that build inquiry and literacy skills.
In addition to the Summer Reading Program, the Indianapolis Public Library will present a number of science-related workshops for children to enhance their knowledge of the physical and chemical world and capture their imagination. Topics include the science of magic, effects of magnetism, and experimentation with gases.
Register at any Indianapolis library branch, Central Library or the bookmobile, as well as the Beech Grove Public Library, to receive a Summer Reading Program points card. Adults can earn points for reading aloud to children.
The Library Foundation is the proud sponsor of the 92nd Annual Summer Reading Program. Supporting sponsors include The Kroger Co.; Toysmith; 92.3 WTTS; Verizon Foundation; Lilly Endowment Inc.; Ruth Lilly Philanthropic Foundation; Indiana Blood Center; Chase; Citizens Energy Group; United Water; Old National Bank; Carrier Corporation; Bridgestone Americas Trust Fund; The R.B. Annis Educational Foundation; and The Library Fund, a fund of The Indianapolis Foundation.
