New IMCPL Job Centers Target Workforce Development

May 27, 2011

Beginning in June, The Indianapolis Public Library will provide greater assistance to chronically unemployed or underemployed individuals through one-on-one personal support at Central Library downtown and five IMCPL branch locations.

The Library is partnering with EmployIndy, the non-profit workforce investment board for Marion County, as well as WorkOne, a local specialist in career counseling and programming, to create neighborhood-level job centers that provide technological training, specialized resources and educational opportunities for those seeking to enhance their employment skills.

Each Job Center site will have a designated space where participants will have access to resources, equipment and supplies. These include new laptop computers with Microsoft Suite, wireless Internet access, printers, USB drives and other computer-related items. The Job Center at Central Library will be located in the Computer Training Lab on the first floor and will be equipped with desktop computers with Microsoft Suite, Internet connections, USB drives, resume paper and other computer accessories. Funding for the Job Centers is made possible by The Glick Fund, a fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation, and The Library Fund, a fund of The Indianapolis Foundation, through grants to The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation.

Specific programming at each site will include weekly sessions designed by WorkOne and led by a WorkOne staff member, with support from Library Computer Lab Assistants. Sessions will focus on job search strategies, interviewing skills, resume development, and instruction on various computer applications. Library Computer Lab Assistants will be available to assist job seekers with WorkOne online resources and other needs during non-class times. Funding for library interns is provided by the Library Foundation.

In addition to Central Library, Job Center sites will be located at the College AvenueEagleEast Thirty-Eighth StreetSouthport and Warren branch locations.

Programming begins June 3 at Central Library. No registration is required. Branch programming will begin June 1st at the Eagle, Southport and East Thirty-Eighth Street branch locations, and on June 2nd at the College Avenue and Warren branch locations. Programming will continue through March 2012.

The Job Center project allows The Indianapolis Public Library to fulfill its mission of providing programs and resources to promote the economic and lifelong learning interests of the community's diverse population.
