Free and Legal Music Downloads Available at Indy Library!
July 31, 2012
Library cardholders can download their favorite music from a catalog that includes thousands of artists, tens of thousands of albums, and nearly three million songs through The Indianapolis Public Library’s web branch at www.indypl.org.
Content is provided by the downloadable music service called Freegal, a name that denotes free and legal usage of music based upon agreements with over 10,000 labels, including those of Sony Music Entertainment. With no software to download and no digital rights management restrictions, Library patrons are free to download up to three MP3 music files per week. Files are compatible with any MP3 player or device and can be transferred to any computer or MP3 player or burned to a CD. The limit is set so that a maximum number of patrons have equal access to the hundreds of genres of music available in Freegal.
"The Library is pleased to offer Freegal as part of our expanding range of resources," said Sharon Smith, Director of Collection Management. "From printed materials to eBooks and digital offerings such as Freegal, the Library is working to satisfy the demands of our patrons who are using more technology to access materials."
The Freegal music service recently launched free mobile apps currently available in the Apple App Store and the Android Marketplace, also known as Google Play. Once the app has been downloaded, library cardholders can search for and enter The Indianapolis Public Library in the library search box to begin accessing Freegal files.
In addition to the vast collection of music, Freegal files include comedy performances from such legends as Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks and Monty Python, as well as historical recordings from Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite and Will Rogers. There’s also a "News" section that features information on the latest releases and entertainment awards.
Freegal can be accessed by clicking on the "Downloadable Music" link from the Library's homepage. Once logged in, patrons can search by genre or by entering their chosen artist, song or album title, or composer.
