Indy Library Presents "Lilly Scientist in Residence" Series

Discover the Amazing Human Body with real scientistsChildren of all ages and families are invited to learn about the intricate workings of the amazing human body during The Indianapolis Public Library's "Lilly Scientist in Residence" series presented at Central Library, 40 E. St. Clair Street.

The series will feature scientists from local health institutions who will share their expertise and real life experiences in these highly visual and interactive demonstration. 

The series opens on Saturday, December 1 from 2-3:30 p.m. in Central Library's Clowes Auditorium and will feature Guy Hansen, Eli Lilly Scientist in Residence, and Dr. Wesley Lackey, Orthopedic Surgeon, Franciscan St. Francis Health. Their program, "Your Body's Strength and Stature: Muscles and Bones," will focus on how muscles and bones work together in perfect harmony to enable us to do amazing things.

The series continues on Saturday, February 9 from 2-4 p.m. in the Clowes Auditorium with the program, "The Unbelievable True Story of Regrowing the Heart!" Hansen and Marc W. Gerdisch, M.D., ACS, FACC, Chief of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Franciscan St. Francis Health, will describe what has been done successfully to regenerate the structures of the heart and what the future holds.

Complementing these special programs will be ongoing Science Odyssey activities for young people in Central Library's Learning Curve through May 2013. Fun brain-building activities known as "The Human Body Puzzle," sponsored by the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization's IOPO Foundation, will use laptops, webcams, drawing tablets, books and more to explore the human body and will be led by Learning Curve Activity Guides. Programs will be presented each weekend with Saturday programs from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and Sunday activities from 1-4 p.m. In addition, a unique exhibit in the Learning Curve's Program Wall will feature the latest innovations in the treatment of heart disease at Franciscan St. Francis Heart Center.
