National Digital Bookmobile Tour Comes to Indianapolis

May 11, 2012

Digital Bookmobile

Readers of all ages can learn how to download eBooks from the Library through interactive demonstrations and high-definition instructional videos when the national Digital Bookmobile visits Indianapolis on Thursday, May 24 and Friday, May 25. The 74-foot, 18-wheel tractor-trailer will be stationed outside Central Library, 40 E. St. Clair Street, throughout each day.

The Digital Bookmobile features a gallery of devices such as the iPhone, Android tablet, BlackBerry, NOOK, Sony Reader and Kindle that are compatible with The Indianapolis Public Library's free download service. As a high-tech update of the traditional bookmobile that has served communities for decades, it is equipped with broadband Internet-connected PCs, high-definition monitors, premium sound systems, and a variety of portable media players, all of which help visitors explore the Library's digital offerings. Interactive learning stations give visitors an opportunity to search the library's digital media collection, use the supported mobile devices, and sample eBooks, audiobooks, music and video.

Indianapolis Public Library cardholders can check out and download digital titles anytime by visiting and clicking on the link, "Your Library @ Home: Downloadable & More," from the Library's homepage. In the first quarter of 2012, Indianapolis Public Library patrons recorded 74,934 downloads of Library eBooks from its collection of over 35,000 eBooks available for free downloading. That compares to 18,850 downloads in the first quarter of 2011. For all of 2011, patrons recorded 122,444 downloads, compared to 23,483 in 2010.

The Digital Bookmobile is operated by OverDrive, Inc.
