Tools of the Trade: A Letterpress Collection Exhibit

Visit the Nina Mason Pulliam Indianapolis Special Collections Room for an exhibit on letterpress "tools of the trade." The collection by printmaker and collector Dave Peat from "Pressing On: The Letterpress Film" includes specimen books, small toy presses, and Indianapolis printing artifacts dating to the 1800s. This program is made possible through a grant from Indiana Humanities in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Humanities and by Friends of the Library through gifts to The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation.

U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith: Quantum Leap Poetry Tour

Individuals of all ages are invited as U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith visits Indianapolis as part of her Quantum Leap Poetry Tour, presented by Indiana Humanities, Brick Street Poetry and the Library. Smith's book of poetry, "Life on Mars," won the 2011 Pulitizer Prize for poetry. It was inspired by her father's work as an engineer for the Hubble Space Telescope and includes science fiction and cosmic themes. She will be joined by Adrian Matejka, the current Indiana Poet Laureate and graduate of Pike High School. This program, sponsored by Eskenazi Health, will be followed by a book signing.

Pressing On: The Letterpress Film - Film Screening & Discussion

View the documentary, "Pressing On: The Letterpress Film," that describes the 500-year-old craft of letterpress, a form of printing using moveable type and printing presses. By the end of the class they will be able to explore Ancestry’s Learning Center; do a basic search of the Card Catalog, Historical Records and U.S. Census databases; open a Family Tree; collect records by printing, saving to a flash drive and emailing to oneself; and access genealogy learning materials through IndyPL eBooks and eMagazines. Before taking this class, participants should have experience using a computer and websites. Adults who have taken the Excel Basics class and are comfortable with creating and formatting a spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel are invited to this intermediate class. By the end of this class participants will be able to use relative and absolute cell references, apply 3D formulas, create headers and footers, insert graphics and create graphs.
