Behind the Badge: Celebrating 100 Years of Policewomen in Indianapolis

View an exhibit featuring historical information and visual artifacts that highlight contributions of women who have served in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department since 1918. It was on June 15, 1918 that 14 women from diverse backgrounds were appointed to IMPD. Among items on display will be uniforms, badges, handcuffs, holsters and colorful photos. The exhibit is available for viewing in the Indianapolis Special Collections Room on the 6th floor during regular Central Library hours.
Join IMPD and Library representatives for a special dedication of the exhibit on Monday, August 6 from 12 noon - 2 p.m. in the Indianapolis Special Collections Room on the 6th floor of Central Library.

Join Steve Barnett and Bill Beck of the Marion County Historical Society as they discuss the history of Indianapolis-based Bobbs-Merrill, one of the nation's most prominent book publishing firms during the first half of the 20th century. The program will tell the story of the firm's close relationship with Hoosier authors, including James Whitcomb Riley, George Ade, Meredith Nicholson and Kin Hubbard.

View a special exhibit featuring photographic images of 30 local African American males intended to foster an understanding of this largely misunderstood and often marginalized segment of the American population. To further inspire conversation, exhibit visitors can view "I Am" video interviews in which the photo subjects discuss common issues confronting the Black American male.
This exhibit, on display during regular Central Library hours in the South Display Hall, is hosted by the Library's African American History Committee in support of the Center for Black Literature & Culture at Central Library. This exhibit is made possible by The Indianapolis Foundation Library Fund, a CICF affiliate, and Friends of the Library through gifts to The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation.

Visit the Nina Mason Pulliam Indianapolis Special Collections Room for an exhibit on letterpress "tools of the trade." The collection by printmaker and collector Dave Peat from "Pressing On: The Letterpress Film" includes specimen books, small toy presses, and Indianapolis printing artifacts dating to the 1800s. This program is made possible through a grant from Indiana Humanities in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Humanities and by Friends of the Library through gifts to The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation.

The book was conceived following the ISO's successful performance of this charming musical story during the Teddy Bear Series at the Library. ISO violinist and author Victoria Griswold, illustrator Sharon Vargo and ISO staff member Megan Masterman will describe how the story was translated into a beautifully illustrated published work that families can enjoy at home. Conversations About Education: What to Know About the IPS Tax Referendum

The entire community is invited to the opening of the powerful exhibit, "Sons: Seeing the Modern African American Male," which continues through October 31. It features photographs of African American males that are intended to further an understanding of this largely misunderstood and often marginalized segment of the American population. Special guest during the opening will be Kevin Powell, one of the most acclaimed political, cultural, literary and hip-hop voices in America today. He is the author of 13 books, including his critically acclaimed autobiography, "The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy's Journey Into Manhood."
This program, to be held in Central Library's Simon Room, is hosted by The Indianapolis Public Library's African American History Committee in support of The Center for Black Literature & Culture at Central Library. In conjunction with the Central Library exhibit, "Sons: Seeing the Modern African American Male," acclaimed author Kevin Powell will discuss his autobiography, "The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy's Journey Into Manhood." This program is part of Powell's mission to empower the powerless and engage communities in real talk about issues in our times. It will relate to the themes surrounding the photographic exhibit (which continues through October 31) intended to foster an understanding of the contemporary Black American male. A book signing will follow Powell's lecture.

Individuals of all ages and families are invited for an afternoon of cultural entertainment that will include a presentation by Dr. Lonnie Johnson, founder and president of Johnson Research and Development Co. and inventor of the wildly popular Super Soaker water gun, who today focuses on inventions related to clean energy. The event also will feature winners of the teen Slammin’ Rhymes Challenge XIII, as well as a lineup of special entertainers. “Fall Fest 2018” is presented by The Indianapolis Public Library’s African American History Committee in support of the Center for Black Literature & Culture at Central Library. It is made possible by the Donna D. Talley Story Theatre Fund and Friends of the Library through gifts to The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation.
Attendees also are encouraged to view the traveling exhibit from the Black Inventions Museum, "A Salute to Black Inventors & Scientists." Also appearing will be the L.U.T.A.N. (Lift Up Tumbling and Nutrition, LLC) Stars; H.Y.P. (Hit Your Peak) fitness instructor "TJ"; rapper and poet Mr. Testimony; and the "Magic of Science" from Mobile Ed Productions.

U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith: Quantum Leap Poetry Tour

Smith visits Indianapolis as part of her Quantum Leap Poetry Tour, presented by Indiana Humanities, Brick Street Poetry and the Library. Smith's book of poetry, "Life on Mars," won the 2011 Pulitizer Prize for poetry. It was inspired by her father's work as an engineer for the Hubble Space Telescope and includes science fiction and cosmic themes. She will be joined by Adrian Matejka, the current Indiana Poet Laureate and graduate of Pike High School. This program, sponsored by Eskenazi Health, will be followed by a book signing.

View this historic, limited-edition poster exhibit celebrating the September 2016 opening of the newest Smithsonian museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture. It is a multi-disciplinary tribute to the best ideals of the American philosophy. "A Place for All People" will evoke the power of oration and freedom stories, the brilliance of artistic achievement, and the soaring heights of cultural expression, philosophy, sports and politics.
This exhibit is available for viewing in Central Library's South Display Hall during regular Library hours.
