25 Kids’ Books to Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.

Let the Children MarchEven young children can understand the concepts of fairness and justice. They are well equipped as preschoolers to describe what it means to be fair, take turns or share. Young children also know what it means to stand up for what you think is right. Who hasn’t heard a child protest, “that’s not fair!”? In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, here are 20 books for children that highlight Dr. King’s life and legacy as standing up for these ideas; fighting for equality and justice beyond the playground.

In 1994, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was officially recognized as a National Day of Service. Volunteers across the country will work together to make a difference. Many of them will be children! To help talk about the many ways even small children can contribute to the bigger world outside their own home, take a look at the book suggestions on  Not Too Little to Help: Raising Socially Conscious Kids. “Can I help?” Yes, you CAN!

It is important for all of us to see ourselves in books, because that encourages us to read in a different way and encourages us to write more.” ~ Dr. Jerrie Cobb Scott Founder of the African American Read-in #weneeddiversebooks</
