Read Right Now! Thanksgiving

Fangsgiving

Here are some of our favorite books to share with kids in the days leading up to Thanksgiving. You can learn Giving Thankstogether the history of Thanksgiving, learn prayers and songs of gratitude from different religious and cultural traditions, learn to draw iconic symbols or laugh out loud at what Thanksgiving might be like for vampires. Or what happens when someone (everyone!) forgets to bring their dish to Thanksgiving dinner! Watch the video read aloud below, Balloons Over Broadway. It is the story of one of the most well-known American Thanksgiving traditions, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the history of the enormous helium balloons in it. Keep your eyes peeled during the parade to see if you can spot a favorite book character. Some character balloons we have seen in the past are Curious George, Paddington Bear & Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

I Need My Monster

Here are some fun stories to help calm some typical childhood fears, like monsters, with laughing! In I Need My Monster (Read by Rita Moreno) Ethan checks under his bed and can’t find Gabe, the monster who lives there. Ethan finds a note Gabe left that says, “Gone fishing. Back in a week.” Ethan doesn’t think he can sleep without Gabe so he tries to find a substitute. These candidates have pointy teeth, sharp claws, and tails, but they are not Gabe! Ethan needs his monster back! In Hey, That’s My Monster (Read by Lily Tomlin) Ethan helps his sister find an under-the-bed monster for herself.

Goodnight Goon is a parody of the childhood classic Goodnight Moon in which a child says goodnight to all of the things in his bedroom. In this Halloween version, a young monster says goodnight to all the things in his tomb…hairy claws and jaws and a pot full of goo and a werewolf hollering, “boo!”

You can click on the book jackets and listen to these stories right now. Listed below are even more Halloween stories you can check out with your library card. If your child is a little bit afraid of Halloween try these 10 Books to Help Turn Halloween Fear into Halloween Fun.

Read Right Now! Pumpkins

StumpkinStumpkin is round. Stumpkin is orange. Stumpkin is a pumpkin with no stem! In the days leading up to Halloween Stumpkin dreams of becoming a jack-o-lantern, but is passed over as shoppers choose all shapes and sizes of other pumpkins, even a gourd, but not him. Will anyone come by and give Stumpkin a chance?

Stumpkin is a lovely, simple story about perceived flaws that are not flaws at all! The endearing Stumpkin might just inspire your kids to choose differently at the pumpkin patch this year. They also might like the fact that Stumpkin’s story doesn’t take place in a pumpkin patch or on a farm. Stumpkin is a city pumpkin:

“It was a few days before Halloween. Outside a little shop in a big city, a shopkeeper placed some pumpkins on the shelves.”

It is always fun to see your own experience in a picture book. The illustrations of jack-o-lanterns in the city are a refreshing change to pumpkin stories that are typically set in the country. Stumpkin is a great addition to fall story time! Choosing a pumpkin at a store, pumpkin patch or orchard is a favorite Halloween activity for small children. Here are some free online books, printables & activities about pumpkins, visiting a pumpkin patch and carving a jack ‘o lantern.
