03/30/2021 | News & Announcements

Exciting news - we are building a new Fort Ben Branch Library to better serve you!

The new location will be built on 2.8 acres of property on the northeast corner of 56th Street and Melner Road (between Post Road and Lee Road), located at the Lawrence Village at the Fort. The building is expected to be approximately 25,000 square feet, with plans to begin construction in August 2021, and to open in early 2023.

The Library is working with Ratio Architects to design and build the new facility, and we are excited to host an online meeting to update the public about our progress, introduce the branch manager, and share the proposed design for the new building!

Register for an online public input meeting, held online via Zoom on April 8 at 6:30pm.

Below are some expectations already planned for the Fort Benjamin Harrison Branch:

  • Collection of 60,000 books, movies, and more
  • Large community room that will be open to the public and accommodate a minimum of 70 people
  • Group study rooms
  • Computer lab with 16 machines
  • Dedicated space for children’s story times and activities
  • Dedicated space for Teens
  • Lounge and study table seating with access to Wi-Fi and power outlets
  • Minimum of 87 on-site parking spaces
  • Adjacent to the multi-modal path along 56th Street
  • Rooftop solar photovoltaic system

The Fort Ben Branch Library is the last of the current slate of major renovations and new facilities funded from individual bonds approved by the Indianapolis City-County Council totaling over $58 million that are assessed with no increase in the Library’s debt service tax rate since 2014.
