Urban Tree Revival at our Michigan Road Branch

national library week 2019 logoWhen IndyPL's Michigan Road Branch opened in December of 2018, the building's design included some practical solutions for energy conservation such as window blinds that automatically open and close based on the amount of light coming in. While these window blinds are indeed efficient as well as nice looking, the building also has some ecologically responsible features that are nothing short of stunning and beautiful! Sixteen tables and various other interior and exterior building features were fabricated from trees actually harvested from the 4.5-acre site before construction began. Watch below to see how the trees were saved and re-purposed to keep the building efficient and beautiful for many years to come.

"Our company's mission is pretty simple - we just recycle urban trees and try to make usable things from them. When krM Architecture and the Indianapolis Public Library came to us and asked us to help on this project I don't think we really realized the impact it was going to have on the community. Coming to the Library now and seeing all the people using the Library has really been rewarding and humbling."

Reclaiming, Repurposing, Reusing, & Recycling Wood

In 2018, wood harvested from trees on the grounds of the new Michigan Road Branch Library of IndyPL was sent to a local Indianapolis craftsman to be recycled for the library for both exterior and interior features. If you're interested in the type of impact recycling wood can have on the environment, enjoy "upcycling" and decorating, or just like working with wood, this list is for you. #indypladults IndyPL_AnikaW
