Note: As Covid-19 causes precautions such as closures for staff testing and cleaning, Library patrons are encouraged to check indypl.org/open for up-to-the-minute information about any temporary closures.
The Indianapolis Public Library will temporarily discontinue Sunday hours, and all locations will shift Tuesday hours to be Noon to 8:00pm effective November 4. Presently, nine of the Library’s 23 locations are open on Sundays, and Library leadership is hopeful that shifting Tuesday hours deeper in the evening will help offset the adjustment for some patrons.
As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to worsen in Central Indiana, eliminating Sunday hours offers IndyPL the ability to reduce cross-branch staffing, easing staffing concerns with contact-tracing if someone becomes ill. Additionally, it affords some breathing room for what has become very tight scheduling.
“We do not make decisions that impact our ability to serve the public lightly, as we know many residents depend on The Library for access to information, materials, wi-fi, and computers,” said Jackie Nytes, IndyPL CEO. “Input from frontline staff, careful analysis of our services, and a desire to safely manage the pandemic suggest that this will yield the best combination of impact on staff versus service disruption for patrons.”
The locations affected by changes to Sunday service include Central Library, InfoZone at The Children’s Museum, and the Franklin Road, Glendale, Lawrence, Nora, Pike, Southport, Warren, and Wayne Branches.
Effective November 4, revised hours of service for all libraries will be:
Monday 10:00am - 6:00pm*
Tuesday 12:00pm - 8:00pm
Wednesday 10:00am - 6:00pm
Thursday 10:00am - 6:00pm
Friday 10:00am - 6:00pm**
Saturday 10:00am - 6:00pm**
*InfoZone is closed on Mondays.
**Central Library will close at 5:00pm Friday and Saturday.
Curbside pickup will continue to be offered daily (except Sundays) at all open locations from Noon – 5:00pm.
This schedule will stay in place at least until the end of the year before being reassessed.
