When you are on vacation, running errands or just away from home, read along stories are a great way to fill what can be hours of waiting into a lot of fun.
Listed below are more than 100 video read alouds from old classics like Where the Wild Things Are to newer favorites like Little Jumbo. It's story time online! This listening library is available all day every day (and all night!) for returning to old favorites. “Read it again!” has never been easier!
Our featured story is Fry Bread by Kevin Noble Maillard, a story about a special food, lovingly prepared, that brings a family together around a table to share both the bread and loving companionship. Fry Bread is illustrated by Caldecott Honor winner Juana Martinez-Neal. Listen to Kevin talk about his book in this Interview. Kevin is a professor and father of two young children, who was dismayed to have so much trouble finding books for his children, "If we don't have these books that reflect us, does it mean that we're not here, that we don't exist, that we don't have anything interesting to say?"
For more ideas to help keep children hearing and enjoying great stories, even when they are unable to visit a library, or are not at school, there are themed online storytimes available from the Indianapolis Public Library here.
These themed storytimes use many of the video read alouds on this page and pair them with activities, printables, and other online resources for @home fun, or, if you are a teacher, for @home e-learning fun. We will keep updating these pages as we collect resources and ideas to share.
We will continue to highlight stories and activities that are accessible by everyone, but also talk about books and audiobooks in our own collection. If you are not an Indianapolis resident with an IndyPL library card, note that many public libraries across the country have the same books and use the same download and streaming services mentioned. Check with your local library when you see something you like. Chances are you will be able to find the same stories where you live. If you can't find them or need more help, talk to your local librarian who will be happy to help you!
For the books on this page, no library card is required!
After you finish this 100, there are even more stories at 100 MORE free video read alouds!
