On March 6, 2023, the Indianapolis City-County Council appointed Dr. Eugene White to The Indianapolis Public Library Board of Trustees.

Dr. White has an extensive background in education administration, becoming the first Black principal of North Central High School in Indianapolis in 1990. Throughout his career, he also worked as deputy superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), superintendent of Washington Township Schools and superintendent of IPS. Dr. White served as the national president of the American Association of School Administrators and is the only Indiana school superintendent to receive the AASA’s Superintendent of the Year award two times, once for a suburban school district and once for an urban school district. Most recently, Dr. White served as president of Martin University, a predominantly Black private university in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood before his retirement in 2019.

Dr. White earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Studies, Health and Physical Education from Alabama A&M University in 1970, graduating with honors. He earned a Master of Science degree in School Health from the University Tennessee in 1971 and doctoral degree in Education Administration and Supervision from Ball State University in 1982.

In his free time, Dr. White enjoys reading, watching movies and is currently obsessed with playing golf. He has also authored the book Leadership Beyond Excuses: The Courage to Hold the Rope.

He will fill the position on the IndyPL Board of Trustees formerly held by T.D. Robinson and is looking forward to continuing to impact the education and culture of the Indianapolis community in this role. Dr. White’s term will run through December 31, 2025.

“I spent my entire career in education, much of it focused on trying to build more equitable educational opportunities for students of any age. Serving on the Library Board is an opportunity to keep meeting our community’s educational needs,” said Dr. White.

Library Board meetings, which are open to the public, are scheduled on the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. For a Library Board meeting schedule and to learn more about Library trustees, click here.
