East Washington Branch
Meet the Branch Manager
Hi, I'm Doriene Smither, manager of the East Washington Branch-one of Indianapolis' two remaining Carnegie libraries. I love to look through travel books and plan vacations. My favorites are road trips that take me off the highway and into old-fashioned small towns, by wacky roadside attractions, or that end at the water. I invite you to visit our historic building, check out our materials, and chat with the staff about our services.
About the East Washington Library
The East Washington Branch opened in 1911, six months before the other Carnegie branch, Spades Park. In 2016, the branch temporarily closed its doors to renovate and bring a century-old building into the 21st century. The remodeling project preserved much of the beautiful woodwork and other features of the original building, including the famous book gnomes and the original circulation desk, adding square footage for more computers, quiet study rooms, and an elevator to make the building accessible for all, including improved access for patrons with physical disabilities. Also in 2016, the branch was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
