Assistive Services

We respond to the diverse needs of patrons with special needs by providing services and adaptive technologies for accessing and using information with ease.

Assistive Services
System-wide Services

All our locations and website are ADA compliant. We offer large type books, audiobooks on CD, audio-described DVDs, closed caption DVDs, electronic books, and audiobooks for checkout. These materials can be requested for pick-up at any IndyPL location. All public computers feature Windows Magnifier.

Accessible Workstations

In partnership with Easterseals Crossroads, we are currently installing accessible workstations in all of our locations to ensure all patrons have access to assistive technology. These workstations are currently available at all of our locations except Glendale, Nora, and Pike, which are scheduled for upcoming renovations. The remaining workstations will be installed as these renovations are completed.

The workstations include:

  • height-adjustable desk
  • large-key keyboard
  • large-print keyboard
  • trackball mouse with programmable buttons and arm supports

Software on the workstations include:

  • text reading app
  • Live transcription app
  • math app
  • magnification app
  • screen reading app for blind and visually impaired-individuals

These tools can “read” information to patrons, respond to voice commands and help people with learning disabilities and mobility limitations complete tasks like writing a document or accessing the internet. These workstations are available for all patrons, with shorter use periods than other stations to decrease wait times.

To learn more about these workstations, visit The Roadmap to Accessible Workstations by Easterseals Crossroads. The article includes photos of the equipment and more detailed information about the project.
