Board of trustees appoints long-time staffer to lead executive position

The Indianapolis Public Library (IndyPL) Board of Trustees passed a resolution during a board meeting Monday to appoint Gregory A. Hill, Sr., MLS, MSM Chief Executive Officer.

With more than a decade of experience in various roles at IndyPL, Hill moves into the CEO position after serving as Acting CEO since December 2022 in addition to his duties as Chief Public Services Officer (CPSO), a position he’s held since August 2021. As CEO, Hill will be responsible for working with the IndyPL Board of Trustees to develop long-term plans and direction for IndyPL, including the implementation of the institution’s climate improvement plan; planning and directing the overall operations and management of IndyPL; providing effective team development leadership to the staff; working collaboratively with civic organizations and community agencies; and working effectively with elected officials at the state and county level.

“Over his many years of service to IndyPL, Mr. Hill has demonstrated steady and sure leadership in every position he’s held,” said Hope Tribble, IndyPL Board of Trustees President. “He is uniquely suited to lead the library through the challenges it currently faces, and the Board firmly believes he will be instrumental in securing a bright future for the institution. We are delighted to appoint him CEO.”

Hill started working at IndyPL in 2011 as a clerk at the Warren Branch. In the years that followed, he served as an adult reference librarian at Central Library, manager of the Decatur Branch, manager of the Lawrence Branch, area resource manager of IndyPL’s east region, chief public services officer and acting CEO. Most notably, in his role as CPSO, Hill developed and implemented IndyPL’s career development and mentor programs along with establishing and measuring system-wide public service diversity, equity and inclusion goals. Prior to starting at IndyPL, Hill served in the United States Navy for over twenty years.

An active community member, Hill also served as the vice chairman of the NineStar Connect Community Trust Fund Board of Trustees, volunteered as a mentor and tutor at Gold Academy Elementary School and assisted with the management of the Block Family Library at Riley Children’s Hospital.

Hill holds a bachelor’s degree in multidisciplinary studies from Liberty University, a master’s degree in library science from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and a second master’s degree in strategic management from Indiana Wesleyan University.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve this institution and honored by the trust placed upon me,” said Hill. “As I’ve worked more closely with the board in recent months to implement the recommendations of the Climate Study and bring IndyPL through this period of transition, I have felt called to ‘step up’ my service to IndyPL. I believe I can help move the library forward.”

“The first step in that forward progress must begin with healing. My commitment is to be a leader who brings people together, both inside IndyPL and across the community. As we prepare to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Indianapolis Public Library, I will work with our leadership, staff and community to ensure the Indianapolis Public Library can fulfill its mission by providing safe places where patrons can learn and grow for decades to come.”

IndyPL’s vision is to be a center of knowledge, community life and innovation for Indianapolis. Hill’s appointment to CEO positions the library well to serve the growing educational and cultural needs of the Marion County community, inspiring all patrons to pursue lifelong learning.
