Indianapolis Public Library Partners With Local Comic Shop to Celebrate Free Comic Book Day on May 3

Stop by any Indianapolis Public Library branch on Saturday, May 3, 2025, to pick up a free comic book in celebration of Free Comic Book Day.

This nationwide annual event is a collaboration between comic book publishers, retailers, libraries, and bookstores to share the joy of comics with readers of all ages. The Indianapolis Public Library is proud to partner with local comic book shop Downtown Comics, who generously provided the free comic books for this event.

“Reading comic books as a child can offer big benefits for literacy development. They're not just fun—they're actually really effective tools for helping kids build reading skills,” said Devery North, program specialist at The Indianapolis Public Library. “We are thankful to be partnering with local business Downtown Comics to offer free comic books for home libraries. Kids often go back and read their favorite comics multiple times. This repetition helps reinforce vocabulary and comprehension without it feeling like work.”

Andrew Davis, a public services librarian with IndyPL, helped The Library get involved with Free Comic Book Day. He hosted Free Comic Book Day at the Beech Grove Branch before the Branch merged with the Indianapolis Public Library system in 2016, and since then, the program has expanded to all Library locations.

No Library card is required to pick up a free comic book. Library staff will be available to help guests pick out their perfect comic. Comics for all ages will be available while supplies last.
