Assistive Services

We respond to the diverse needs of visitors with special needs by providing services and adaptive technologies for accessing and using information with ease. All our locations and website are ADA compliant. We offer large type books, audiobooks on CD, audio-described DVDs, closed caption DVDs, electronic books, and audiobooks for checkout. These materials can be requested for pick-up at any Library location. All public computers feature Windows Magnifier.

Accessible Workstations

In partnership with Easterseals Crossroads, we have installed accessible workstations in all our locations to ensure all visitors have access to assistive technology.

The workstations include:

  • height-adjustable desk
  • large-key keyboard
  • large-print keyboard
  • trackball mouse with programmable buttons and arm supports

Software on the workstations include:

  • text reading app
  • Live transcription app
  • math app
  • magnification app
  • screen reading app for blind and visually impaired-individuals

These tools can “read” information to users, respond to voice commands, and help people with learning disabilities and mobility limitations complete tasks like writing a document or accessing the internet. These workstations are available for all visitors, with shorter use periods than other stations to decrease wait times.

To learn more about these workstations, visit The Roadmap to Accessible Workstations by Easterseals Crossroads. The article includes photos of the equipment and more detailed information about the project.

Home Delivery Service

Library Express matches screened volunteers with Library borrowers who are unable to visit their local Library branches due to physical/medical limitations. Library Express volunteers deliver Library materials to their assigned borrowers on a regular basis as part of an ongoing service. This free service is available to meet both short-term and long-term needs and is open to all qualified Marion County residents. For information, please call Volunteer Resources.

Program Sensory Kits

A selection of sensory items is available during Library programs for participants who have sensory needs. The items can help minimize discomfort that may be experienced due to bright light, loud noises, or other stimulations. Items are available by request during programs to accommodate a variety of needs and are available to both adults and children.

Universal Changing Stations

Universal Changing Stations are full-sized, height-adjustable changing tables designed to meet the needs of individuals with mobility challenges who cannot use traditional restroom facilities. These stations promote dignity, safety, and accessibility for individuals with disabilities, older adults, and anyone who requires assistance with personal care. Universal Changing Stations are available at:

Fort Ben Branch - Certified Autism Center™

Fort Ben Branch staff are trained to better understand what autism is (and isn’t), how to empathize and understand how autistic and sensory sensitive individuals experience the world, communicate more effectively, and be aware of common sensitivities. Additionally, patrons at the Fort Ben Branch are able to see sensory guides upon entering the branch, have access to a quiet and low sensory Comfort Room, and are able to borrow a Sensory Kit for the duration of their visit. The Sensory kit contains noise dampening headphones (child or adult sizes are available), and assorted fidgets and soothers. Visitors may ask to use a kit at the “Ask Here” desk.
