Wake Up, Woods StoryWalk® in The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park at Newfields

Take a stroll through The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park at Newfields to read Wake Up, Woods by Michael Homoya and Shane Gibson with illustrations by Gillian Harris. The StoryWalk® is a partnership between The Library and Newfields. Find this book and more like it below. We hope you'll visit soon!

Wake Up, Woods

Homoya, Michael A.

This book pairs verses with informative text to tell about natural life found in North American woodlands. Children and families will learn about plants, such as green dragon and bloodroot, along with the insects, birds and mammals that play a role in that plant's reproduction.

From Seed to Plant

Gibbons, Gail

This book explains how plants pollinate and how seeds get dispersed in simple illustrations. Perfect for children interested in growing their first plant!

A Seed Grows

Portis, Antoinette

This book is great for younger children who are curious what happens beneath the soil as seeds grow. If you read the physical copy of this book, you'll be in for a tall (sunflower) treat!

Try Reading Ready Time at Home!

This recorded virtual program incorporates 5 skills of early literacy learning – reading, writing, talking, singing, and playing, helping caregivers and educators prepare young children for success in school and in life. Special guests share music, dance, and stories helping to build vocabulary and background knowledge. Designed for children 3-6 years old, Reading Ready Time runs throughout the school year. All episodes are available on our YouTube channel.

Research shows that reading aloud to young children can significantly improve their chance for success in kindergarten and beyond. You can also help kids enjoy books and stories by joining 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. Caregivers log books and receive incentives for reading outloud to kids. At 1000 books, every child receives a hardback picture book. Or check out a Bunny Book Bag, grab-and-go bag of 15-20 books for caregivers on the move.
