History
The first library to serve the neighborhood opened in 1957 as the Emerson Branch. This frame house near East 38th Street and North Emerson Avenue soon became too small to meet the neighborhood's needs, leading to construction of a 7,500-square-foot branch at the same location in 1962. The Emerson Branch closed its doors in 2003 when the current 16,000-square-foot library opened as the East 38th Street Branch.

History On Stage - A Presentation from Madam C.J. Walker & her sales agent, Mrs. Pinkston

Experience a live performance from a pair of two historic women: Madam C.J. Walker & Ida B. Wells, Sojourner Truth & Harriet Tubman, or Madam C.J. Walker & her sales agent, Mrs. Pinkston. After a 45 minute presentation they will answer your questions for 15 minutes.
Game Time at East 38th Street

Children and families of all ages are invited to drop in to the East 38th Street Library to play a variety of games. Games are provided. Children 10 years old and younger should bring a grown-up with them to this program.
Storytime at East 38th Street - Preschool

Preschoolers ages 3-5 and their caregivers are invited for stories, songs, and fun! Daycares/Preschools are welcome at storytime. Please contact the Children's Librarian at 317-275-4357 at least 2 days prior to storytime to allow us to plan for your group.
