Summer Reading for Teens

Play your way! Grab your friends and grab a book because it's time for Summer Reading at The Indianapolis Public Library! The Library is the ultimate playground for creativity, imagination, and discovery whether you're a beginning reader or a bookworm. Join the adventure, learn something new, and become a lifelong reader!


1. Register

2. Track Reading Time

Download and print a Teen Reading Tracker (.pdf) or pick one up at any Library location. Track the time you spend reading, listening to audiobooks, reading aloud to someone, or having someone read to you. If you need help finding something to read, don't worry, just ask one of your librarians! Reading for 20 minutes a day helps build a strong lifelong reading habit!

3. Earn Prizes

When you reach the 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20 hour markers, visit any Library to claim your prize! Prizes are subject to change and while supplies last.

Claim prizes between May 30 to August 1, 2026.

Please note: participants registered as a group (daycare, camp, summer schools) complete the program at 10 hours of total reading. But you can certainly read more!

Play your way to another prize!

Complete 7 of the 11 activiy challenges to win a prize. Prizes available while supplies last, must visit a Library to claim. Visit your local Library to collect special stamps along the way. Download and print the Teen Activity Challenges (.pdf) or pick one up at any Library location.

  1. Play by Giving
    Donate a new or used book at your local Library. Books will be donated to Listen to Our Future. What book did you donate? What do you hope someone enjoys about the book?
  2. Play with Your Imagination
    Set up a tinkering station with materials like craft supplies, cardboard, and tape. Create your own invention! What did you make? What materials did you use?
  3. Play with Art
    Draw something silly - a llama surfing, a piece of fruit in outer space, a design for a $3 bill. What did you draw?
  4. Play at the Library
    On a separate piece of paper or sticky note, write a message to place inside your favorite book for the next reader to find. What book did you choose?
  5. Play with Reading
    Pick a favorite book and create a playlist of songs that match its mood or characters. What book did you pick? What songs did you select?
  6. Play with Food
    Invent a new snack using three ingredients you already have at home. Give it a creative name. What ingredients did you use?
  7. Play with Music
    Use a free app or just clap and tap to create a beat. Have a friend repeat your beat and add a new one to the end. Keep going back and forth to create a song together. What did you like about the beat you created?
  8. Play with Writing
    Write a few sentences about your favorite book you've read this summer. Complete at your local Library with special stationery! What's your favoriate book you've read this summer?
  9. Play in Your Neighborhood
    Find and photograph or draw five things that represent summer in your neighborhood. What did you find? Where's your favorite spot to hangout?
  10. Play with Storytelling
    Take a story you know well and write or draw an alternate ending. Make it funny, dramatic, or completely unexpected. How did your ending differ form the original?
  11. Play with Kindness
    Create a bingo card with acts of kindness. Complete as many as you can in a week and challenge your friends to do the same. What small acts of kindness did you do?

Grand Prize Drawing
All readers who log reading time will be eligible for grand prizes at the end of the summer if all age groups in the Summer Reading Program together reach a total of 22 million minutes read. Every branch will have a winner. Winners are chosen at random and contacted in August.
