The Brightwood Branch opened in 1901 as the sixth public library in Indianapolis. It served the Brightwood community at several locations along Station Street, one street west of its current North Sherman Avenue storefront site which opened in 1972. A 1996 renovation at this location doubled the size of the branch to 5,400 square feet.
A new Brightwood Branch Library is coming to 25th Street and Sherman Drive. Design of the branch will reflect input from neighborhood residents through two community meetings. The $5.9 million branch will be funded by a bond issue approved by the Indianapolis City-County Council and assessed with no increase in the Library's current debt services tax rate.
