Library Circulation Policies

The rules for how to borrow, renew, request, and return library materials.

Borrowing Materials

Patrons in good standing may borrow:

  • Borrowers over the age of 17, 125 items
  • Borrowers ages 6-17, 75 items, including 6 DVDs
  • My First Card, 25 juvenile print items

Returning Materials

Return books, audiobooks, DVDs, Blue-rays, Magazines and CDs inside any Library location, or in one of our location book drops.

All other Library materials must be returned inside to the location in which the item(s) were borrowed.

Loan Periods and Renewals

All items physical books, audiobooks, DVDs, Blu-rays, Magazines, and CDs with the exception of "feature film" DVDs and Blu-rays may be borrowed for 21 days.

Feature films may be borrowed for 7 days.
"Feature Films" do not include tv shows, documentaries, nonfiction (exercise, cooking, etc.), nor children's movies (all G and some PG), which all have 21-day loan periods.

If not requested by another borrower, all items may be renewed. Items may be renewed up to a total of ten times. Renewals may be done in person, by phone through Telephone Renewal 317-269-5222 or on the website at My Account.

Other items, such as banners, equipment, artwork, etc. may have different loan durations that can be confirmed by a staff member at the time of checkout.

Overdue Reminders

The receipt provided at the time of check out serves as the official notice to the Borrower of when materials are due.

Reminder notices may be sent to those who have registered for email or telephone reminders. Please contact your nearest location for details.

Lost or Damaged Items

Items that are lost or damaged will be charged the cost of those items as listed by the Library's catalog. With pre-approval, a replacement copy of the item may be substituted; however, a $10 restocking fee will be charged.

Requesting Material

Items not on shelf at your location may be requested in person or through the Online Catalog. There is a maximum of 75 requests per borrower at any given time. Borrowers may sign-up to be notified by email, text, or telephone. Items requested may be returned to any Indianapolis Public Library location. If material you want to request is not available in our catalog please contact us about an Interlibrary Loan.
